WBC 2010 - Our wrap up

What a great week it has been. Champions from over 50 countries coming together in London town to compete against each other for the title of world champion. And a deserved winner it was too. Mike Phillips of Intelligentsia coffee in Chicago came out on Friday afternoon as the 2010 World Barista Champion.

Congratulations to Mike and all the team behind him, but also, massive respect to all the others who competed and tried their best for their country, for themselves and for coffee in general. Well done.

We had a great week in Kaffeine, with a lot of visitors coming in to say hello. Our highlight of this was having Mike Phillips (WBC 2010) and Stephen Morrisey (WBC 2008)come in on Saturday afternoon with the Intelligentsia people for lunch. But other highlghts included:
The Kenyan champion Jimmy and his crew spending loads of time with us.
The Russian champion Nadia with Gleb and their entourage
2006 World Barista Champion Klaus Thomsen and the full coffee collective in at 6 pm on saturday night and we re opened the grinder and poured more shots and cappucinos.
Kona Blue coffee family from the midlands in on Friday
Coffee Aroma family from Lincoln in on Thursday
James Hoffman and Anette Moldvaer in for dinner on Tuesday

Perhaps there are others I have missed and I apologise if I have, or perhaps others came in and did not introduce themselves.

Either way, it was all for the good of coffee.

I am sure there is a lot more I could write about the week just past, perhaps in the future. Until next time.

Financial Times Article

Today we are very happy because the Financial Times has written a wonderful piece about coffee in London and in particular, Kaffeine. This is a proud moment for us all, as we have worked very hard to create a special place in London for coffee and food, and to have such a reputable newspaper acknowledge this is high praise indeed. We are very grateful.

It is also great to see the mainstream media putting out a positive review about a growing and exciting industry. Having the media back independents in this way is also much appreciated. This is how the industry grew so well in Australia, and if it helps create more independent cafes in opening because this media attention and also a greater consumer demand for better quality espresso drinks, then London really will become the coffee capital of the world once again. We can only keep working at it.
